Scanning guide and validation rules
Learn how to scan product data, review issues, understand all 13 validation rules, compare plans, and troubleshoot common problems.
Run your first scan
No special setup is required after installation. Follow these four steps to check your product data.
01
Start a scan
On the app dashboard, click “Run scan.” The app starts a read-only check of eligible products using your enabled rules.
02
Wait for completion
The status changes from queued to running. Depending on the number of products, completion may take a few minutes. You cannot start another scan while one is in progress.
03
Review detected issues
When the scan finishes, review the severity summary and counts by rule. On the issues page, filter by rule, severity, product title, or handle.
04
Fix and check again
Open the product directly in Shopify admin, make the correction, and run another manual scan. Growth and Pro also support automatic checks when products are created or updated.
You can start on the Free plan
Free supports up to 100 products and three manual scans per month. All issue types and counts are shown, with up to five affected products listed per rule.
The 13 validation rules
You can toggle each rule, change its severity, and adjust the description-length threshold. Changes apply to the next scan.
| Rule | What it detects | How it is evaluated |
|---|---|---|
| Duplicate SKU | The same SKU is used by multiple products or variants | Empty SKUs use the Missing SKU rule. Values are compared exactly without trimming or normalization. |
| Duplicate barcode | The same barcode is used by multiple products or variants | Values are compared exactly without normalization. |
| Missing SKU | A variant has no SKU | Evaluated per variant. |
| No product image | A product has no images | Evaluated per product. |
| Missing image alt text | At least one image has no alt text | One missing value is enough to flag the product. |
| Description empty or short | The description is below the minimum after HTML is removed | The default is 80 characters and can be changed in Rule settings. |
| Missing SEO | The SEO title or meta description is missing | Either missing field flags the product. |
| Missing product type | The product type is empty | Evaluated per product. |
| Missing vendor | The vendor is empty | Products where Shopify inserted the store name are not empty and will not be flagged. |
| No tags | A product has no tags | Evaluated per product. |
| Price anomaly | A price is zero, or compare-at price is less than or equal to price | Evaluated per variant. |
| Not in a collection | An active product belongs to no manual collection | Automated collection membership is excluded. |
| Negative inventory | A tracked variant has a negative inventory quantity | Variants without inventory tracking are excluded. |
SKU and barcode duplicate matching is exact
The app does not normalize capitalization, surrounding whitespace, or full-width and half-width characters. Visually similar values may not be duplicates when their strings differ, so check for inconsistent formatting as well.
Review and fix results
- Summary
- See issue totals by Critical, Warning, and Info severity, plus counts for each rule.
- Issues list
- Filter by rule, severity, product title, or handle, then open the product directly in Shopify admin.
- Ignore list
- On Growth and Pro, ignore intentional exceptions per product. You can unignore them later to return them to the list.
- CSV
- On Growth and Pro, export unresolved issues as UTF-8 CSV. Each export is limited to 50,000 rows or 16 MB; a final notice row is added when truncated.
Recheck after making corrections
Manual-scan results do not change just because a product was edited. Run another scan. When automatic checks are enabled on Growth or Pro, product create and update events are also evaluated.
Plans and features
Growth costs $7.99/month and Pro costs $14.99/month. Both include a 7-day free trial, and charges appear on your Shopify bill.

Plan notes
- Pro has no plan-level product limit, but a technical safety limit of 40,000 products applies to every plan.
- Pro custom rules support required metafields, required-tag regular expressions, and description minimums by product type.
- Development stores can use every feature for free.
Troubleshooting
I cannot start a scan
Check whether another scan is already in progress. Free is limited to three scans per month and 100 products; Growth supports up to 2,000 products. If scans were requested repeatedly, wait five minutes after the previous request and try again.
The scan remains queued or running
A scan may take several minutes depending on product count and Shopify processing. Reload the page to check its current state. If it remains unchanged for a long time or shows a failure, wait and run it again.
A corrected product remains in the issues list
Manual-scan results are not removed automatically. Save the product, then run a full scan again. Automatic checks on Growth and Pro respond to product create and update events.
SKU or barcode duplicate results are unexpected
Duplicate matching is exact and does not normalize values. Check capitalization, surrounding whitespace, and full-width versus half-width characters. Empty SKUs use the Missing SKU rule instead.
Not-in-collection results are unexpected
This rule evaluates active products and manual collections. Automated collection membership cannot be determined in the bulk scan and is excluded. Turn the rule off if it does not fit your workflow.
CSV export or Ignore is unavailable
CSV and the ignore list require Growth or Pro. Free still shows every issue type and total count, but lists up to five affected products per rule.
Weekly email or Slack notifications are not arriving
Weekly email requires Growth or Pro, while Slack requires Pro. Confirm notifications are enabled and the destination email or Slack Incoming Webhook URL is correct, then try a test send. The delivery weekday uses UTC.
Frequently asked questions
Does the app change product data?
No. The app uses only read_products and read_locales and has no permission to write products. You make corrections in Shopify admin.
Does it access customer or order data?
No. The app does not access customer names, addresses, email addresses, or order information.
What data does the app store?
It stores the issue type and minimal product references needed to display results, such as title, handle, and ID, plus your rule, notification, and ignore-list settings. Product data itself is discarded after checking.
Can I customize the rules?
Yes. Toggle and change the severity of each standard rule, and set the minimum description length. Pro also adds three custom-rule types.
Can Free show every issue?
Free shows all issue types and total counts. It lists up to five affected products per rule; CSV and the ignore list require Growth or Pro.
What happens after uninstalling?
All store-related data retained by the app is permanently deleted within 48 hours. Because the app never changes products, there is nothing to undo in product data.
Are Japanese and English supported?
Yes. The app admin, help center, and support are available in Japanese and English.
Contact support
If the issue remains, include your store URL, the exact error message, when it happened, and what you already tried. Do not send customer data or passwords.
